My personal Review: The Etiquette iPhone Application "Etiquette Avenue"

On the 14th June 2009 I made the podcast “40 Online Marketing Tips for Etiquette Professionals” in which I mentioned as my last tip “the iPhone Application” (link: http://blog.mannersandcareer.com/2009/06/14/podcast-20-40-online-marketing-tips-for-etiquette-professionals.aspx), because it would have been the first one to be created and lots of money could have been made from it.

Well, fact is there are 34 iPhone "Etiquette" Applications available, out of which 32 iPhone Applications (!!!!!) have been created ever since:

  • Etiquette Avenue
  • Tipping Tips
  • Etiquette
  • Golf Etiquette
  • Pocket Etiquette
  • iGuides - Wedding Etiquette
  • Etiquette by Emily Post
  • The Book of Business Etiquette (March 2010)

Today I’m going to review the “Etiquette Avenue” iPhone Application.

* Created on: 30th June 2009

* Created by: The Protocol Centre (content), Jim Morin and Gregg Weiss of Blue Whale Web Solutions (illustrations)

* Price: $2.99

* You can buy and download it at: the Apple iTunes Store

* Content:

  • Etiquette Categories with over 250 practical and relevant etiquette rules and guidelines (Presenting Yourself, Greetings & Handshaking, Introductions, 10 Sec Self Introductions, Small Talk, Networking, Meeting Etiquette, Job Interviewing, Thank you notes, electronic etiquette, International Awareness, dining: you are the guest, dining: hosting an event, table manners, setting the table, food for thought).
  • Tip of the day
  • About
  • Dining Photos

What I particularly liked:

  • The list of categories provided (16)
  • The easy way to navigate through the information, it is clearly structured.
  • The pictures used in the dining etiquette section (types of wine glasses, American dining style, continental dining style, napkin placement, table settings for a 4 and 5 course meal, thank you note). Using pictures can tell you more than 1000 words.
  • The user will get good and quick etiquette advice at his fingertips. If you have to refresh your knowledge in the last minute you can just open the application and quickly review the category you need.
  • The depth of the “Job Interviewing” category (other categories are considerably shorter).

How I would rate it?

On a scale of 10, I would give it 6 out of 10. I would have given it a “10” if:

  • In addition to the pictures in the dining etiquette section it would have included some videos. This would have been particularly useful for the last category “Food for Thought”.
  • It would have included some quiz questions in order to test a person’s knowledge before reading the information (just to test a person’s etiquette IQ beforehand) and after reading the information (in order to find out how effective and helpful the provided content really was).
  • It would have been cheaper (many applications are offered for free, at $ 0.99 or $ 1.99).
  • Some kind of real-life simulation or videos would have been used in order to teach the content to the iPhone user (e.g. for the "Introduction Category"). This format would have been particularly appropriate for the etiquette subject.  Then the price of $2.99 would have been justified - this is my personal opinion. Other people might have another view. To me it looked a bit like reading an eBook or reading this information from a website (which would be free).
  • If some categories would have been a bit more detailed (such as the “Electronic Etiquette”, the "International Awareness” category which keeps important differences very general and superficial.
  • It would have also included a category regarding “Etiquette at the Workplace" which I consider particularly important.
