My personal experience: The Kid's Etiquette Training Certification by EtiquetteMoms

In July/August 2009 I enrolled in the Kids Etiquette Certification Program “Teaching Etiquette to Children 3 to 12 Years of Age” offered by Elena Neitlich from Moms on Edge LLC, (www.etiquettemoms.com/childrens-etiquette.cfm, elena@momsonedge.com).

I would like to share my experiences with my audience in that regard. First, let me give you some more details about the course:

* What you get:

  • A Trainer’s Etiquette Manual of 132 pages with a marketing manual included
  • A Powerpoint presentation on DVD with 30 slides “Secrets to Being a Great Teacher”
  • A certificate upon completion
  • A networking opportunity on Facebook within a closed group
  • One-on-one coaching (if you ever need questions answered) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

* How much it costs:

The current price is $190.00 if you pay in full, otherwise $237.50 and you can pay in five convenient monthly installments of just $47.50.

* How long it takes to get certified:

That is entirely up to you. You could theoretically be certified within a week. All you need to do is: reading through the course material and studying it, taking the online test and making sure you paid your fees in full.

* How you get certified:

By taking an online test whenever you wish to do so. It consists of 30 multiple-choice questions.  The certificate will be sent to you via courier. You can find a certificate template and other more detailed information at: www.etiquettemoms.com/childrens-etiquette.cfm

* The topics covered are:

* General information regarding learning the material, presenting the material, developing different length class formats and agendas, meeting and greeting the audience. Furthermore,

* Why do we have rules of Etiquette,

  • Please/Thank you/and your’re welcome,
  • Making mistakes,
  • Tact,
  • Apologies,
  • Rudeness,
  • The big word “no”,
  • Sharing,
  • Gift giving and receiving,
  • Attending a party,
  • Table manners,
  • Eating at school,
  • Eating at home,
  • Table linens,
  • Using your napkin,
  • Sitting politely at the table,
  • Passing the food,
  • Correct use of utensils,
  • American Style dining,
  • Continental Style Dining,
  • Laying down utensils,
  • Let’s eat,
  • Breaking bread,
  • I don’t particularly care for this,
  • Oops,
  • Good hygiene,
  • Dealing with teasing and bullies,
  • Teasing,
  • Bullying,
  • Skillful conversationalists,
  • Joining a group in conversation,
  • Exiting a conversation,
  • Potty mouth,
  • Now is neither the place nor the time,
  • Telephone manners,
  • Telephone safety,
  • Good behaviour when others are using the phone,
  • Text messaging,
  • Social networking sites,
  • The importance of people.

What I liked ....

  • The possibility to getting certified via distance learning.
  • The list of supplies you need in order to run etiquette courses (mentioned at the beginning)
  • The marketing part in general with some good strategies and tips. Templates of press releases, a brochure copy, letters, referral letter etc. have also been included. You would theoretically just have to add your details, such as name, company’s name, contact details etc.
  • The idea of giving initially a free seminar on “The benefits of etiquette training” in order to get people interested in this topic.
  • The list of etiquette problems you might encounter and how etiquette training can help.
  • That complete scripts for your teaching (suggestions on how you can express yourself) have been provided.
  • The interactive games, songs and role-plays.
  • The fact of getting good and quick answers to my questions from the founder Elena Neitlich.

* Some suggestions ...

--> On the DVD I would add:
  • some videos in which the founder shows how she conducts kids etiquette classes,
  • audio files of the songs provided in the manual in order to give the reader an idea about the song’s melody,
  • and more pictures on the slides.

--> In the manual I would:
  • Highlight the scripts in a different colour. The reader would instantly see what he is supposed to say (or at least take it as a suggestion).
  • Include some pictures.
  • On the last pages I would include a list of other recommended kids’ etiquette books or general resources to extend the knowledge on this subject. I personally felt, that in order to become a Kids Etiquette Expert I would have to read additional material (what I did, such as “365 manners that kids should know”). But this course states correctly “Teaching Etiquette to Children 3 to 12 Years of Age” the BASICS of good manners, etiquette, social skills, and respect to other children”, therefore I would still recommend it as a good course.

--> Generally I would:
  • Try to reduce the waiting period for receiving the course material. Having been in Italy at the time of enrolment, I had to wait longer than US-citizens (10 days). If someone would like to start this training straight away after payment, it would be great to receive the content first in form of an ebook. And days later getting it home delivered via courier. It’s important to take notes or highlight certain parts on a hardcopy.
