In search of manners ... The blunder
“Working as an engineer for an international company, Scott was invited to lunch at an upscale restaurant by his boss to meet three of their company’s best clients: one from Bombay, one from Jakarta, and one from Boston. Scott arrived wearing a T-shirt, jeans, and running shoes, greeted the clients with a slap on the shoulder, called everyone “my man”, interrupted others while they were talking, and ordered two martinis before launching into a huge, rare steak. The next day, Scott was no longer an engineer for an international company.”
Lesson learnt?
“In business, it’s your responsibility to anticipate your customer’s values, as well as some of the nuances of the customer’s cultural expectations. Most Indians consider the cow to be a sacred animal, most Indonesians don’t drink alcohol, and most Bostonians expect a handshake and a name. It’s your responsibility to ask your boss what she’s wearing to lunch and following suit. Don’t let your behavior damage your company’s relationship with its clients / and cost you your job.”
