This I feel is really a tough question to answer. But lets try to look at it from both perspectives. I personally feel that the answer to this question is not as black and white as it might seem in the beginning.
In my humble opinion Manners are important but how you look is also very important. Someone once said," First impressions are the last impressions". However and i must stress this that if you dont behave well with the clients then you will most certainly lose the deal.
I look at it this way, when you go into a Porsche showroom you except the whole package i.e. smartly dressed people with impeccable manners. These are the people that have to welcome you into the club so they must project the right image for the company.
But if we would not take such an extreme example then I would much rather deal with a courteous well mannered ugly person than an arrogant, rude, obnoxious good looking one. I feel good customer does not depend on who looks the best, but rather what you can do for the customer. I would be much happier with an ugly air hostess who is not stingy with the drinks rather than a good looking one who is.
But maybe I am too old. I know that todays generation would want it all i.e. the whole package.
Sorry Karin but after writing all this I realized that this topic was specific to a job interview. Well then I think it depends on what the company is looking for. So who is the target audience. Will this person be sitting behind a phone or does he/she have a very public facing role within a company.
I hope that companies would look beyond the looks and focus on the other skills people have to offer. Reply to this

It takes both good manners and an appropriate appearance. Working in public situations always acquire the eye of scrunity. So, why not get the job by fulfilling both? Reply to this
